Session Three: Mondays 6pm-8pm November 9 – December 7
A 5-week program designed to help emerging doulas receive additional support, information, and experience as they prepare to offer their skills and services professionally to the community. Meeting weekly on Zoom we will begin with case studies and group work and then invite volunteer participants from all over Canada who are interested in advance care planning, caregiver support, legacy projects, grief preparation, and end of life education to receive mentored support from student doulas.
Session Outline
Week One: A review of the doula scope of practice, ethics, doula do’s and don’ts, and group discussion regarding the case studies given prior to the first session. Homework: prepare for intakes, first conversations, and preparing answers to the common questions that are asked by potential clients.
Week Two: A review of how to support clients before, during, and after death. We will engage in a discussion about how to create plans for different situations, and students will discuss how they will approach different challenges that can arise in this work. Homework: prepare a plan for the case study given.
Week Three: Working in pairs, each group will have 30 minutes to facilitate a first conversation with a participant, including gathering pertinent information, sharing about advance care planning, legacy projects, end of life wishes, family communication, spiritual/emotional support, funeral planning, grief support, etc. and then each group will receive 15 minutes of debriefing and mentorship before receiving the homework assignment for the week.
Week Four: Working again in the same pairs, each group will meet with their participant for 30 minutes, providing information, education, support, and suggestions, while practicing active listening and being mindful of practicing all aspects of doula care. Debriefing and mentorship will follow, along with the last homework assignment.
Week Five: For the final session, each group will meet once again with their participant to offer final recommendations, to answer any remaining questions, and to provide resources, support, and gentle compassion. Participants will offer feedback to the students before the final debriefing and mentorship takes place.
